How to Choose an Outfit According to Our Body Shape
Updated: Aug 13
To look stylish there is no need to buy expensive clothes or follow the latest trends. It is better to understand our body proportions and choose clothing styles that make us feel comfortable and confident. Each person’s body is different, so the same style does not look perfect on everyone.
Understanding body shape makes shopping easier. Body shape should not be used to achieve any fixed standard. It can be useful to understand body proportions or can be a starting point to experiment with different clothing options (Arruda, 2024).
Understand your body shape
To identify your body shape, it’s best to observe shoulders, waist, and hips and look at their overall proportions. Common categories include inverted triangle, rectangle, pear, triangle, hourglass, round, or apple shape (Arruda, 2024).
There is no need to follow these categories as a strict rule. Every person has different proportions. So, it is better to use body-shape guide to gather ideas. You can even try different outfits to see which cuts, colours, and lengths best match your style.
Inverted Triangle shape
In an Inverted Triangle shape, the upper body can be wider in comparison to the lower body. To make an outfit visually balanced, it is better to try clothing pieces that create more attention on the lower half.
A-line skirts and wide-leg trousers can be useful options for this body shape. These styles can add more visual interest to the lower half and can help an outfit to create a more balanced appearance (Arruda, 2024).
You can experiment with different colours and patterns. Simple tops with a printed skirt or wide-leg trousers can create an easy everyday outfit.
Rectangle Shape
Shoulders and hips can be in similar proportions while, the waist can look less defined. If you want to highlight your waist, then it’s better to try waist- defining clothing.
Belts, mid-waist trousers, and belted jackets can be used to define the waist area (Arruda, 2024). Fitted jackets, high-waisted trousers, and belted pieces can also be styling options for a rectangle- shaped figure (Leo & Ugo, 2025).
For example, one simple pair of trousers styled with a tucked-in-top and belt can add more definition to an outfit.

Pear or Triangle Shape
In Pear or triangle shape, the lower body can be wider in comparison to the upper body. To bring an attention to the upper half, we can try different colours, prints, and necklines.
Brighter-coloured and interesting printed tops can highlight the upper half. Boat neck and sweetheart necklines, like wider necklines, can also be an option (Arruda, 2024).
If you want a simple look, try dark jeans with a colourful top. This can be an easy combination for everyday styling.

Hourglass Shape
In an hourglass shape, the shoulders and hips are relatively balanced; however, the waist is more defined. If you want to highlight your natural waist, you can try fitted and waist-defining pieces.
Instead of wearing shapeless or overly baggy pieces, you can try structured clothing (Arruda, 2024).
Fitted or tailored cuts, high-waisted trousers, pencil skirts, and belts can be stylish options for hourglass body shape (Leo & Ugo, 2025).
This does not mean that you need to avoid relaxed or oversized clothes. If you feel comfortable in a loose sweater or relaxed jeans then you make these as a part of your personal style.
Round or Apple Shape
In this shape, the upper body can comparatively look fuller, and the waist can look less defined.
You can try well-fitted, streamlined tops, jackets, and straight-leg jeans (Arruda, 2024). There are possible styling choices for an O-shaped figure, which include flowing fabrics, straight cuts, V-necklines, and mid-length jackets (Leo & Ugo, 2025).
You can keep your outfit simple and add an interesting neckline or a jacket. This way, you can create a new look without completely changing your outfit.
Don’t Ignore Outfit Proportion
Other than body shape, outfit proportion can also affect overall appearance.
While styling the “rule of thirds” can be used as a guideline to experiment with clothing lengths and proportions (Arruda, 2024). For example, you can style shorter tops with long trousers or longer tops with different-length bottoms. Pairing pieces in this way can change the overall appearance of an outfit.

This is not a compulsory rule. You can try different combinations in front of a mirror. This is an easy way to see which proportion is best for you.
Consider Your Lifestyle
Do not only focus on body shape while styling. Your lifestyle, daily activities, and occasion are also important for styling.
For work, college, casual outing, and special events, clothing choices can be different. So, while shopping, it is important to think about how many times you will wear that piece (Arruda, 2024).
If you find an outfit stylish but do not feel comfortable in it, then that piece is not a practical choice for your wardrobe. Combining comfortable clothing with personal style can make a long-term wardrobe more useful.
Conclusion
Understanding your body shape can help you choose better outfits. You can try different cuts, colours, and styles to create a look that helps you feel comfortable and confident.
The most important thing is to enjoy fashion according to your personal style and preferences.
