Layering is a great way to make an outfit look stylish and practical. But when we wear more than one clothing piece together, our outfit can often look heavy or bulky. With the right fabrics, light layers, and simple styling ideas, we can create a polished and comfortable look without looking bulky.

Start with Light Layers

While layering, we should focus on the thickness of clothing pieces. Instead of wearing thick clothing pieces together, we should choose lightweight layers. By styling thin layers together, we can feel warmer and outfit will not look heavy (Jessica, 2020).

You can start with a lightweight top and add a thin layer over it. In this way, each layer maintains its space, and outfit feels comfortable.

Fabric Choice Is Also Important

Fabric can make a difference when layering. Cotton, wool, and cashmere-like fabrics can be used in different layers. If you add several layers of lightweight fabrics together, the outfit does not feel heavy (Jessica, 2020).

If you put heavy clothing over a thick sweater, then outfit can look bulky. While choosing layers it is important to make sure that after putting all the clothes together, the outfit is still comfortable.

Define Your Waist

With several loose layers, the outfit’s natural shape can look dull. If an outfit looks shapeless after layering, then choose belts to define the waist. A belt or belt bag can help highlight the waist area (Jessica, 2020).

By adding a belt over the layered outfit, you can make your outfit look more defined. It is a small accessory but can change the overall appearance of an outfit.

Choose Accessories Wisely

Layering is not just limited to shirts, sweaters or jackets. In cold weather, scarves, hats and gloves can also be part of an outfit. But it’s important to avoid unnecessary bulk when choosing accessories (Jessica, 2020).

For example, if you have already added several layers, then rather than putting on a thick scarf, you can choose a thin wool or cashmere scarf. In this way, you can maintain warmth and avoid bulky appearance  around the neck area (Jessica, 2020).

Keep Layers Comfortable

Layering does not mean that wearing several clothes together automatically makes an outfit look stylish. It means that the layers should be comfortable and should not make your movement unnecessarily difficult.

While choosing clothes, it is also important to check that the sleeves, shoulders, and waist area have enough space. By layering with lightweight pieces, you can add or remove layers according to your comfort.

Start with Simple Combinations

If you are new to layering, there is no need to start with a complicated outfit. Start with basic pieces from your wardrobe. Try a lightweight top, add a second layer, and then an outer layer.

If an outfit looks bulky, then first check the fabric thickness. It is possible that by removing a heavy layer, the outfit would look more balanced. For accessories, belts, belt bag, or lightweight scarves can be enough as simple additions (Jessica, 2020).

Conclusion

To make layering stylish, wearing thick clothes together is not necessary. With lightweight layers, suitable fabrics, a defined waist and carefully chosen accessories, you can create a comfortable and balanced outfit (Jessica, 2020).

Next time you layer, think about the clothing thickness and fabric, and then add accessories. This way, you can enjoy warmth and style together while avoiding unnecessary bulkiness.
